Magic: The Gathering's Lost Caverns Of Ixalan Includes A Jurassic Park Crossover

Sep 20, 2023

Magic... er... finds a way.

Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming The Lost Caverns Of Ixalan set is getting its own Universes Beyond tie-in, with none other than Jurassic Park.

Celebrating 30 years of both Magic and Jurassic Park, the crossover will include mechanically unique cards based on the movies, and will be found in both Set and Collectors boosters.

Announced at Magic’s 30th Anniversary Gen Con panel, Welcome To: Jurassic World is a bonus sheet that will be found both in Collector boosters, and as part of The List, which is found in 25 percent of Set boosters. While we haven’t seen any cards from this partnership yet, it has already been confirmed via the official Magic Twitter that the cards will be mechanically unique.

This is a similar scheme to what we saw last year with The Brothers’ War and its tie-in with Transformers. It’s not a complete Universes Beyond crossover like Lord of the Rings or the also-announced Fallout Commander decks, but more a set of 18 cards that are thematically tied in with the set they come in. For The Brothers’ War and Transformers, it was giant mechs, for Ixalan and Jurassic Park it is, of course, dinosaurs.

It won’t just be those 18 cards, though, as there will also be multiple Secret Lair drops based on Jurassic Park. These will likely be coming in the final Secret Lair superdrop of the year, scheduled to be available for preorders around the same time as The Lost Caverns of Ixalan’s launch.

Universes Beyond has exploded in popularity since it was first introduced with Universes Beyond x Stranger Things in 2021. We’ve had crossovers with the likes of Street Fighter, Fortnite, Arcane, and Lord of the Rings, and we have Doctor Who, Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, and Final Fantasy still to look forward to.

However, it will be interesting to see how well the Jurassic Park cards do. The Transformers cards weren’t the best-received, as many felt they distracted from the story of The Brothers War itself. Lost Caverns of Ixalan takes us back to the plane of Ixalan after five years away, so maybe Jurassic Park will fall foul of the same criticisms when it launches.

Elsewhere at the Gen Con panel, we had the full line-up for 2024. Hot on the heels of Ixalan and Jurassic Park, we’re back to Ravnica for two sets, including Ravnica Remastered and Murders at Karlov Manor. Then, Outlaws Of Thunder Junction is a Wild West-focused set bringing back many of Magic’s major villains for a rootin-tootin’ shootout. Bloomburrow follows with an animal-focused romp in a world with no humans, before the Standard year closes out with the ‘80s horror aesthetic of Duskmourn: House of Horror.

Lost Caverns of Ixalan, and Welcome To: Jurassic Park launch later this year. It hasn’t been confirmed if Jurassic Park will also be on digital clients.
